Disaster Management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response, and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters. From www.ifrc.org -

As said above ‘dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies’. What are these emergencies? Why I’m talking about the Indian perspective per se? Let’s take this shot and find out.

From Indian Perspective

We live in the 21st century & yet we are far away from acting like it. I, myself live in a township. And not until recently, there were fire extinguishers put in all of our buildings. Why so? Why weren’t their extinguishers to begin with?

Some famous author once said “ आग लगने पर कुआँ खोदना “, we really give justice to the author by acting in such a way.

It’s not difficult. We just have to do & put a few extra things in place, that too for our own safety, no one else’s. What am I talking about here? I’m not talking about any tsunami or earthquake. Neither am I talking about man-made disasters such as wars, global warming, etc. I’m talking about sudden incidents like fire, electric misfunction, someone collapsing due to work stress.

We, Indians, don’t consider such type of disasters to begin with. If there is a fire, we’d rather run away than put it out. Someone faints, not my business. But the truth is, we can easily be prepared for such things. How? Let’s see.

In case of fire — Have fire-extinguishers on every floor, vehicles, have water sprinklers in place. On every alternate floor their should be buckets of sand and an emergency hammer.

In case someone’s ill and faints — keep a first aid kit. Big corporations and companies can have a medical department set up and a regular doctor for such situations. This is also a type of disaster management.

There are many more little things we ignore. What we need to focus on instead is :

Minimization of loss of life and damage to property

Preparedness

  • is the main way of reducing the impact of disasters.
  • Do routine fire drills and all relevant disaster drills.
  • Work out a pre-planned action plan in case of such disasters.

Community-based preparedness and management.

Let’s work in making our community disaster free. Just some extra effort, nothing more is required.
